The Unique Carbonatite Volcano (2,962m)
Ol Doinyo Lengai is a geological marvel and a deeply sacred mountain to the local Maasai community. Standing at 2,962 meters, it is the only active volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This extraordinary lava is much cooler than normal silica lava, flowing like liquid black oil by day and glowing with a silver-red sheen at night. The climb is very steep and technical, usually undertaken at midnight by headlamp light so trekkers can reach the steaming active crater rim right at sunrise for an unforgettable experience.
