Trekking & Exploration Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron via Maasai Rift Valleys

Your private 4x4 safari cruiser will pick you up from Arusha at 08:00 AM. Travel along a rugged, scenic off-road track cutting through the spectacular East African Rift Valley escarpment. Pass remote Maasai bomas and dry volcanic dust plains, enjoying distant views of the symmetrical cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Arrive at Lake Natron in the afternoon. Take a late afternoon walking safari to the lake shores to view millions of breeding Lesser Flamingos. Check into your safari camp/lodge for dinner and a brief sleep before the midnight climb.

Day 2: Midnight Summit Climb (2,962m) & Ngare Sero Waterfall Walk

Hike Time: 10-12 hours | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Volcanic Ash & Crates
Wake up at 11:30 PM for light snacks. Your expert Maasai mountain guide will transfer you to the base of the volcano to begin climbing by headlamp light at midnight. Face a challenging, very steep scramble up paths of loose volcanic ash and solidified lava channels. Reach the crater rim right at sunrise! Peer inside the active steaming craters to observe bubbling white-ash lava formations. Descend back to the base by 10:00 AM for resort rest, then enjoy an afternoon cooling swim inside the lush Ngare Sero canyon waterfalls.

Day 3: Maasai Cultural Footprints Trail & Return to Arusha

After a relaxed breakfast, take a guided walk to view prehistoric hominid footprints fossilized in the volcanic mud flats near the lake shores, dating back thousands of years. Visit an authentic local Maasai village to learn about traditional nomadic herding life and cultural warrior dances under the shadow of the mountain. Check out and embark on a relaxing drive back to Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight.
