Popularly known as the "Whiskey Route," Machame is internationally acclaimed for its breathtaking scenic variety, traversing five distinct climate zones from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. The 7-day variation offers an elite acclimatization advantage by following the mountain principle of "climb high, sleep low," significantly maximizing your summit success rate as you scramble the iconic Barranco Wall and make the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (2,835m)

Hike Time: 5-7 hours | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Rain Forest
Depart from your hotel in Arusha for a 2-hour drive to the Machame Gate for registration. Begin your trek walking along a muddy, winding trail through the dense montane canopy. Listen to endemic birds and spot black-and-white Colobus monkeys swinging in the trees. Arrive at Machame Camp in the evening, where your mountain porters have already set up your tents. Enjoy a warm wash and hot dinner.

Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Hike Time: 4-6 hours | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Moorland
Leave the rainforest behind and cross a steep, rocky ridge onto the volcanic moorland zone. Cross open heather valleys and ascend up a steep sandstone gorge to reach the open rocky terrain of the Shira Plateau. Shira 2 Camp offers a spectacular panoramic viewpoint of the Western Breach glacier and the peak of Mount Meru floating in the distance.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) via Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Hike Time: 6-7 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Semi-Desert
A vital day for natural body acclimatization. Trek eastward up a semi-desert landscape to reach the massive volcanic structure of Lava Tower (4,630m) for a hot lunch. After resting high, descend through a valley decorated with bizarre giant Senecio trees to sleep lower at Barranco Camp (3,950m). This follows the vital "climb high, sleep low" rule to shield you from altitude sickness.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Hike Time: 4-5 hours | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin your morning tackling the famous Barranco Wall—a non-technical, fun scramble that rewards you with incredible mountain cloud views from the top ridge. Cross a series of alpine desert hills and stone glacial valleys to descend into the green Karanga Valley. Arrive at Karanga Camp for hot lunch and a fully dedicated afternoon of body resting.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Base Camp (4,673m)

Hike Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 4 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trek upward through a steep, windswept alpine desert ridge to connect with the Mweka trail. Ascend toward Barafu Camp, your final mountain base camp. The air becomes thin as you reach the rocky ridge. Your crew will serve an early dinner at 05:00 PM. Pack your warm layers, listen to a deep summit briefing, and get to sleep early before the midnight summit wake-up call.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) down to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Hike Time: 11-14 hours | Distance: 15 km | Habitat: Arctic Peak / Rainforest
Wake up at 11:30 PM for hot tea and cookies. Begin your frozen summit push by headlamp light, climbing steep scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Push your limits for another hour across glacial snowfields to stand on **Uhuru Peak (5,895m)**—the rooftop of Africa! Celebrate, capture sunrise photos, and descend back to Barafu for lunch before walking further down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a deep, well-deserved sleep.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) to Arusha

Hike Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Rainforest
Complete your journey with a relaxing downhill stroll through Kilimanjaro’s lush lower tropical rainforest tracks. Arrive at Mweka Gate where you will sign the national register and receive your official gold certificates for reaching Uhuru Peak. Gather for a traditional farewell song celebration with your professional porter crew. Transfer back to your Arusha hotel for hot showers and a celebratory toast.
