Trekking Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Glades (2,100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
Hike Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Rain Forest
Your adventure begins with a private 3-hour transfer from Arusha to Londorossi Gate for park permits. Drive further up to Lemosho Glades to meet your expert porter crew and start hiking. Walk through an untouched, pristine rainforest canopy filled with soft mosses and endemic wild orchids. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and wild forest elephants. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for dinner and your first night inside the mountain canvas tents.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
Hike Time: 6-7 hours | Distance: 14 km | Habitat: Moorland
Trek along a steadily rising path as the forest canopy thins out, entering the vast moorland zone. Cross steep volcanic ridges and traverse the dramatic Shira Caldera plateau. You will cross a series of heather streams before arriving at Shira 2 Camp, located high on the moorland plateau. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo peak floating in the clouds ahead.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) via Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Hike Time: 6-7 hours | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Semi-Desert
Trek eastward into a windswept alpine desert. Ascend to the massive volcanic rock monument of Lava Tower (4,630m) where hot lunch will be served in our dining tent. This high altitude interval triggers vital body acclimatization. Following lunch, descend into the giant senecio-filled Barranco Valley to sleep lower at Barranco Camp (3,950m), fulfilling the key mountaineering rule: "climb high, sleep low."
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Hike Time: 4-5 hours | Distance: 5 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Face your morning with an exciting scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. This non-technical ridge climb rewards you with breathtaking cloudscape views. From the ridge top, trek across a series of rolling alpine hills and glacial valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp for hot lunch. Spend a relaxed afternoon resting your leg muscles.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Base Camp (4,673m)
Hike Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 4 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascend along a steep, rocky alpine ridge connecting with the southern Mweka descent route. The mountain air turns thin as you push to Barafu Base Camp. Your dedicated porters will prepare your campsite on a steep rock face. Enjoy an early hot carbohydrate-rich dinner at 05:00 PM, double-check your warm summit gear, and rest early before the midnight wake-up call.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hike Time: 11-14 hours | Distance: 15 km | Habitat: Arctic Peak / Rainforest
Wake up at midnight for hot coffee and biscuits. Begin the grueling final frozen summit push by headlamp light, climbing through heavy scree switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Push forward for another hour across magnificent blue glaciers to reach **Uhuru Peak (5,895m)**—the rooftop of Africa! Celebrate your victory, capture sunrise photos, and descend back to Barafu for lunch before walking further down to Mweka Camp for a long, deep sleep.
