The Pink Alkaline Wilderness
Lake Natron is an otherworldly, mineral-rich soda lake nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Famous for its unique reddish-pink crystalline crusts caused by salt-loving microorganisms, the lake is the absolute principal breeding ground for over 75% of the world’s Lesser Flamingos. The highly alkaline waters provide a natural protective shield against predators, allowing millions of flamingos to nest safely. Visitors can hike to the cooling Ngare Sero waterfalls and view fossilized prehistoric human footprints preserved in the surrounding mudflats.
